Hello Dianne!

You are right, I am always pulling hair off of my canvases! I did not think of the whole idea of hair and skin, but that has to be so! :-) Yes, my fingers are a great tool and sometimes it really looks like it too! I often am found scrubbing with a small brush before I leave the house!

My children are already carrying paintings off which is just fine with me as it gives me another location to store them! :-)

Mmmm, I apologize for you not being able to enlarge photos here. I have left you a message about my change of blog venue. I hope it makes sense!

Thanks Dianne, it is always a pleasure to have you stop by!

A great story, Kim! Yes, we must leave all sorts of bits of DNA in our acrylic paintings - bits of hair and skin, especially if you work flat and bend over the work. I use my hands and fingers a lot in my painting process, so there must be many finger prints there. I love to think that my paintings will still be about long after I left this planet, hopefully with my children and their children. It is great to leave a legacy of art works that might be passed down in the family.
I am drawn into this painting and wanted to see it in more detail. You blog won't allow me to enlarge the picture - this is a good thing as far as your painting security - did you change to this type of blog for this reason?

It is incredible, isn't it? Can you even imagine? You are right, Miranda, those are the greatest stories. I often feel sad about artists not being able to realize what they have offered the future with their work - some of them not even being "discovered" until after their deaths.

I think you are right, get a good swipe somewhere in there to leave your print!

You are right, it is an amazing thing to contemplate about the future of our work. I keep thinking about it, too!

Thanks Miranda! I appreciate your insights and contemplations here so much!

What an incredible story! The owner must feel like the luckiest guy in the world. I love hearing about people who've picked up art at a garage sale or thrift shop for a couple dollars, only to find out it's a long-lost masterpiece!

I guess the lesson here is to stick at least one good thumb print into every painting, haha!

It's interesting to think about where your paintings will be in a hundred years. Will they still be around? Will they be worth anything? Will people know it's your painting just by the style? With some of these drawings, it's amazing the tiny details they use to identify the artists.

Once again, great post Kim!

You are right, Andrea, my prints are very much all over my paintings. One would have to look hard at them, but they are there! I had not thought so much about how watercolors are not like other paints in that you really rely on tools to manipulate them and the paper literally absorbing the moisture doesn't allow a lot of time for any kind of prints! You sure raise a good point about the age of watercolors. They truly must be a relatively new medium. If I had to guess, you are right, you would have to go back to Asian cultures in order to find the beginning. I wonder if the sumi style inks are the precursor? I honestly do not think acrylics are old enough yet for us to know how long they last or even how long the pigments are stable. Of course, the makers tell us forever, but what is that - forever? You are right, it is all very interesting to think about. Thanks Andrea!

Can you even think what this means to this buyer? Well, I would not have that kind of money to put into a drawing, anyway, but it sure is lovely to hear these stories! You are right technology is amazing how it can see these layers, date pieces, know just the very obscure material being used, etc. Like you, I am sure there are prints all over the place on a lot of my work. I find it completely amazing how the prints in the chalk remained clear enough all these years to be able to tell the actual prints! Wow!

Thank Suki!

Kim, that was so interesting to read and yes, I had briefly heard about this on the news here in Paris but then forgot about it completely. Now I'm smiling cause your fingerprints are certainly all over at least some of your paintings, no? I have never thought of this. Watercolor is so ephemeral, from this perspective at least. We don't see as many WC paintings from that age as Oil paintins. Makes me wonder. I guess the oldest I personally have seen in exhibitions where those of a Japanese Wood Printer, Hokusai, from the second half of the 19th century. But I remember those Da Vinci drawings and sketches, everybody knows them, but generally they are kept in special places cause they are so delicate. Hmmm. And do we know how many years Acrylic paintings will last? Can we know this, I dont know:) Oh this is fun to think about this all, thanks so much for sharing, love, Andrea

Well this was interesting. I most probably am leaving fingerprints all over my paintings etc as I am a messy worker. Interesting how these new fangled devices can see layers of paint. Kim, it might be fun to see your paintings with this camera or whatever it is, as you have so many layers. Of course, the story is one we all wish/hope might happen to us. Buying a painting thought to be one thing that turns out to be another!
