Happy 2010!

I hope everyone is enjoying a wonderful beginning to 2010 and enjoyed a Very Happy Holiday Season!  New beginnings are always wonderful and full of hope.  I am looking forward to great things happening this year and I wish the same for all of you.  Since we celebrate Christmas in my family I was graced with several lovely art books and today I wanted to share one with you I am having a great time with at the moment – Inside the Painter’s Studio by Joe Fig.

61Wui9KqkjL._SS400_Fig asks 24 artists a series of questions while visiting them in their New York City area studios.  There are photographs of the studios as well as Joe Fig’s own sculptures of each artist working in the studio.  One of the questions Joe asks is if the artist has a motto or creed they live by?  Many say they do not, but some have responses which have interested me.  I thought this was a great question to pose here at the beginning of 2010, however.  Do you have a personal motto or creed which you follow? For me, it is to be myself.  Being true to the person I am is very important to me.  I have always been this way, and I have found it is appealing to some people and challenging to others.  The thing is, I can’t help it.

I hope you are willing to share your motto, creed or resolution here.  Do you think they are important guides?

Kim, I dont think I do have a motto. Mine used to be the girl scout creed of “Be Prepared” but i gave that up for “I do something, I see what happens.” Maybe that’s it. Looks like a great book. Glad you had a good holiday.

Hello Suki! I like your creed…”I do something, I see what happens.” That is truly wonderful…and again insightful. I am really enjoying this book and think it is one of those where different things will jump out each time you read it. I love that about a book…you novel is like that! Thanks So Much, Suki!

Happy New Year to you, too, Sabi ! I wish for it to bring you more joy than you thought could be. Thank you so much for your positive wishes!

  • A couple of years ago I decided on a “slogan” rather than a resolution.

“Be Nice And Keep It Simple”

Initially I thought I’d change my slogan each year, but this one has served me so well that I’ve just hung on to it.

You can even see it on one of my January journal pages over at my Second Studio blog.

    Happy New Year everyone……

Hello Paula! It is lovely to see you here! I love your “slogan:! That makes tons of sense and it appeals to my needs to keep things simple and to always be kind. I am going to be visiting your blog very soon! Thank you for visiting, and I hope all is well in New Mexico!

Oh no, I believe I’ve been caught creedless! It’s something to ponder in 2010 though…

The book looks wonderful. And by the way, I finally got over to TED to look at the Gilbert video. I did enjoy it! And while I was there I saw Amy Tan’s. If you haven’t yet gotten to that one, I really recommend it.

  • Kim says:

I think that is just fine, San. It seems to me as though you should have something like “Live Fine With A Warpy Mind!” Just kidding. I enjoyed your recent post…too good! You really may enjoy this book.

Hi Kim, something I always stick to, have been for some time now, is “I just have to persevere”. The word “just” is in this creed-sentence cause sometimes I don’t even know why I have to, I just have to. Persevere, I mean:) But I think I also can use (need) something of your motto, “be myself”…Sometimes I feel as I’m automatically myself and sometimes I feel like I’m automatically NOT myself, lol. So, To be oneself, while living in harmony with those around us, that seems like a lifelong learning process, sometimes a tightrope walk. Balancing act….
The book looks so full of insight, I’m eager to hear more about it…
    Have a wonderful day
    Andrea

    Hello Andrea,

I completely understand how you know you have to do it and not know why. I think that is probably about you listening to your intuition which doesn’t always give a logical explanation, but it feels so right. I also understand that feeling of knowing you are authentically yourself in an automatic way, but sometimes we have to step outside of ourselves and become people who need to fit into a particular circumstance. You know? It doesn’t exactly feel like us, but it gets us through something we need to get through. I find being in this position exceptionally exhausting. Do you? Of course, as you say living oneself while living in harmony with those around us is absolutely a lifelong learning process probably because things are always changing. Now I don’t mind change, but many people struggle with it and that can be a lot of pressure.

I think this book would speak to you as the questions are both practical and insightful. The best thing is that the artist’s personalities come through during the interview.

    Thanks so much, Andrea!
