Open the Door, Then What?

This is another Paris Door I sketched out in the red sketchbook.  I keep wondering what the drawings on either side mean.  Maybe it is a code. What do you think they mean?

I continue to sketch away at these doors, and they continue to look like Alice found them down the rabbit hole.  The thing is I am working with color a bit and I find as hard as I try, my brain will not allow me to color them as they appear in the photographs!  It seems my imagination takes over and I go along wondering what in the world this would be like when you consider the door as a metaphor for something else.  Does this happen to you?  Color seems to be the cross-over element for me.  Do you have an element of art which carries you further…where you really take artistic liberties?

I had never considered how a particular element or principal of art might be a catalyst for something else, but for now this seems to be true.  It is an interesting observation for me.  When I take out the color, the work becomes a exercise in line drawing.  When the color comes into play, everything changes. This should not surprise me because color has always been what I love to work with.  I always want to get to the smallest detail of color.  Like this painting…

Stay tuned, because I am adding color to some of these doors now!

I hope everyone has had a lovely Mother’s Day!

of course when one draws with pen or pencil one has a singular line, or hatched work etc. the medium of adding color, unless w/pencils, is so different and changes the drawing a lot i think. most often when i paint from a photo i change the colors to suit the painting itself and my mood etc. that’s the fun.

i have drawn a door and will post today.

a cup of tea? but it couldnt be that simple. a cup of tea and a card reading.

Suki, I never thought about a cup of tea. It could be as having tea is a big deal in Paris…you can have tea just as easily as in London.

Oh, I do look forward to your door posting today. I hope you had fun drawing it. Color does change a drawing a lot, but there are also other things which might also be a catalyst for some people…like texture, pattern, form, etc. I find it interesting to contemplate what takes artists deeper into their work. Isn’t that just the greatest thing about having a creative license? You can do what is right for you at the time. It is also wonderful when you just do it without thinking…just allowing your creativity to take over.

    Thanks Suki!

Kim, I’m sure you won’t be surprised at all to learn that color is a big thing for me. It’s very emotional and personal and quite a teacher.

When I look at your drawing, and then your painting, it seems the first stimulates your analytical side, the part of you that questions, and wants to solve puzzles. When I look at your painting, I see a watery immersion in impulse. I like both sides of you very much. : )

No surprise at all! Thanks San, I think there is some kind of analytical side to me, although it is not all that strong. I spent many years trying to live out that part of me in various ways, only to have it make a mess. I read the title of a book somewhere which was Be Yourself, Everyone Else Is Taken I thought that title was one of the best pieces of advice anyone could have.
