I am also reading and journaling a great deal which I find helpful in moving the painting and life forward in a positive direction. Recently, I have found the work of Peter Clothier very inspirational and thought provoking. His book, Persist: In Praise of the Creative Spirit in a World Gone Mad with Commerce, has particularly struck a chord with me.

image belonging to Peter Clothier

This is a series of essays Dr. Clothier wrote over a 30 year period for himself. I, for one, am so glad he found a way to bring them all together for publication as I can’t seem to get enough of his words. Before I found this book, I was consumed with the thoughts of what has gone wrong in our society that causes things like hideous amounts of oil to gush into our waters, the abuse of one’s profession to the point of causing economic collapses and the kind of thinking which make parents think it is a good thing to begin the higher education process with children before kindergarten. What are we doing wrong and why do we keep doing it? Now, I am no genius, but it seems to me we have forgotten the importance of the process of living. In today’s world, we are so focused on the product, we forget the process. Heck, so many even begin with the product and then consider how to get there only to keep focused on the product no matter what gets hurt in the process.

Consider this recent article in the New York Times which talks about teaching 5 year old children engineering so they will have a better chance of getting a job when they are 23! Probably, by that time, the world is going to be so saturated with engineers they are not going to get a job anyway. Why is it we can’t see that allowing children to become what they are meant to be will help the world balance out? Who are we to push children in one professional direction or another? It seems to me this is just teaching them to ignore their own instincts rather than encouraging them to be the best “person” they can be! Now this brings me back to Peter Clothier who describes himself as a “recovering academic”.

So much of what Peter talks about in this book resonates with me, so this is only a part of what you will probably hearing about him in the future. In his essay, “The Bandaged Place”, Peter says, “…it’s in our anger, in our pain, and in our grief – and our joy – that we find common ground. So I aim to write the most intimate, personal words I can, in which everyone can find a piece of him- or herself.” This is what artists do. We open up ourselves for all the world to see, we give a little part of ourselves each time we create, we often wear our heart and soul on the outside, leave a piece of it in each creation and hope something we have done will touch that place in someone else. This is a part of the creative process. Yes, it is slow, but we quickly learn that fast isn’t better. Yes, it makes us utilize a lot of “inspiration” to get to the place of maybe a single sketch (reading, writing, travel, blogging, etc.), but we also learn from each and every mark because each time we give. We come to understand keeping it for ourselves has no value. Just like love has no value unless you give it away. Maybe this emotion isn’t the same the creator had when they were laying bare their soul, but if it resonates in any way with the viewer or the reader, then it is successful. Now, consider how different the world might be if educators, parents, politicians, engineers, bankers and other business types all did this? What if they, even ever so slightly, stepped away from their industrial model (step one, step two, step three, etc. and don’t make a mis-step) and considered the importance of the process over the product? I wonder if that spill in the Gulf of Mexico would have happened or if those in the financial sector would have been partying with the retirement savings of others or if we would be trying to make 5 year old children be 30 year old adults? I wonder if our world would be a better, more thoughtful, more kind place? I wonder if we would consider more and push less? I wonder if we would be a happier society? Well, there is little limit in what I wonder.

So now you know where my head has been lately. I contribute this contemplation to giving myself permission to enjoy the process of living and creating, rather than pushing for the product. Do you think this makes a difference for you – in your life and in your work? If it makes a difference for the individual, do you think it would make a difference in the world if more individuals would be process rather than product oriented? I am eager to hear your thoughts.

I tried to upload this video however it was not going to happen. Use this link to watch. I highly recommend it!

Elizabeth Gilbert on Nurturing Creativity on TED

Earlier this year, Elizabeth Gilbert author of Eat, Pray, Love, gave a talk on Ted.com which touched me in a profound way. I have mentioned this talk before. I revisit her talk with some regularity however, because it serves as a reminder of the importance of living up to my own expectations rather than the expectations of others. When I first shared this video, it touched so many people and the email conversations went on about it for weeks and months. People found Elizabeth’s talk inspiring and a good reminder of what it means truly to live a creative life. I hope it spurs the same kind of conversation here.

As you may know, Miranda’s comment in the last post reminded me of this talk and I thought it was a good follow up to what we were talking about as far as maintaining our creativity. Elizabeth talks about how much strength it takes just to show up for creative work and how society really puts pressure on creative people to constantly perform at peak performance. It hasn’t been like this forever and she contemplates if this kind of pressure is what gives creative people the reputations of being a little off in the head with those who choose not to live a creative life. You have to be fearless to be an artist. The stories she shares sound so familiar to me. I wonder if you find some idea of resonance in them?

If you have not seen this talk before, I think you are in for a real treat. If you have seen it, I encourage you to watch it again (I hear new thoughts and ideas each time I watch it). Do her thoughts help you see your work in a different way? Are you turning your art around in your head and viewing it from different perspectives? Did you hear some ideas here which may help you manage all that happens in your creative life? I am eager to hear what you have to share.

It has been a while since I wrote about Slow Art. You can read that posting here. This subject is never far from my mind and you can find some slow blogs and web sites in the list on the right column of this page. Recently, I have been thinking about the relationship of taking time to make art and taking time to view art. Does it make a difference in one’s life? One thing viewing art slowly does is give you time to fine the subtleties of the work, the depth of the layers and the richness created over time. These are things that a quick glance cannot accomplish.

What does it take to create art slowly? Slow is different if you are working with watercolors than it is if you are working with oils, it is different if you are working with clay than it is if you are working with bronze. The materials obviously make a difference, but I am talking about something more. Mark Rothko apparently was once asked how long it took him to create one of his color field paintings. His quick response was, “57 years!” which was his age at the time! He used work and life experiences to reach his goals of a single painting. I think this was the right response. I know I pull from a lot of experiences to create and to live. It takes a great deal of work to “unearth” these lessons and experiences, too. I find, reflecting is often the best way, although it takes a lot of tools to bring those reflections to the surface.

In my last post, Suki reminded me of the importance of contemplation and not to worry about if anyone else thought you were working or not, because you know the truth. I knew she was right and was grateful for her wise words. It takes a great deal to get to our personal truths, create a piece of art and then to expose those truths to a public who may or may not understand the meaning or take the time to slowly view what you have so laboriously created over the expanse of your life. It seems to me, though, that with the slowness of creation the artist probably also recognizes many people cannot or are unwilling to really see.

In the presentation about Mark Rothko done by Simon Schama, I learned Rothko was also asked how far away someone should stand from one of his color field paintings and in a single breath, Rothko said, “18 inches”! If you have ever experienced one of these paintings and stood in front of them at that distance, you will understand why he did not hesitate! Last weekend I had the opportunity to do just that and was completely overwhelmed by the experience. Truly, it makes all the difference and drives home the truth that it took him 57 years to paint it!

Creating Slow Art and Viewing Art Slowly seem to go hand in hand to me. As many of you know, it takes me a long time to bring a canvas into its fullness as it has an incredible number of layers. Some of the reason for this is because I think I gain so much in this act! I wonder if these paintings cause people to slow down and really see any better? Do you life your life slowly when you can?

I do not know how to present it, really. I have not actually decided it works, so I am sticking my neck out here to share it with you.

As you know I have been working on all kinds of things lately, in and out of the studio. Some of those things make me crazy, some frighten me (like creating a watermark) and some are pure joy. With this painting, you are looking at all three of these. It makes me crazy because it is on paper and you all know how I feel about framing, but I just could not help myself. It was fun to work on this large paper (maybe 18″ x 24″). I also worked with something new which was a little scary. This has pearlized ink included in several layers. I was not sure how it would react, but it was fun to kind of squirt on, watch it move, squish it around or just let it sit there. The thing is, I also really lost myself working on this piece. It truly felt as though I was moving on air with it. I loved that feeling of being.

Now it comes down to this… what do you think of my experience? I hesitate to call it an experiment, it was truly an experience. Should I try to go this route again…if I can? Should I give up and leave the paper and ink alone? Is this worthy of a frame? What do you think?

I hope the world is treating you all beautifully here in almost Mid-March! I hope you are finding the time to be creative.

Thank you so much for stopping by and sharing with me your thoughts…I honestly appreciate each and every single one.

Have a Fantastic Day!

The thing is, this one is already spoken for…you just never know about these things as I have had many doubts about this one. I have several large pieces going on right now, I can’t work on all of them in my tiny room at the same time. (Yes, that was a big moan you just heard.) I am trying to work on some methods to keep myself from getting into this spot again, though…trying to develop some different ways of working. We will see how it turns out.

I have been re-reading parts of Trust the Process by Shaun McNiff. I have loaned this book to some friends and they have graciously added comments and underlined parts which really is lovely (I highly recommend this if you are not distracted by notes and underlinings in your books.) I came across this statement:

When we play alone with art materials, we are enshrouded in an intimate and quiet relationship with the imagination, which acts as a silent partner.

Of course this made me think of working with the muse which has also become an important part of what I have been doing lately…really engaging with my muse through my journal. No, that was not my idea alone, read Elis Cooke’s post to see what I have been doing. Andrea has been engaging with some special spirit over at her blog…could it be her muse which is making itself known by coming out of the end of her brush?

My muse sure has given me a creative punch here without a doubt. Of course she would have me go into debt, but we work things out. I have to say I have fallen in love with her and am always happy when she taps me on the shoulder or needs to be coaxed out. How about you? Do you find your muse a good resource for moving your art forward? Is your muse difficult or easy to work with?

Have a Beautifully Creative Day!

This particular book, Finding Your Visual Voice, is a very basic workbook type reference. One reason I like it is for the interviews of various artists. Sometimes, when my muse decides I need to explore something I am not aware of exploring, I will turn to this book to see if there is something I might be missing as I proceed. One of the things which caught my eye when I opened it last night was this quote:

Everyone knows that a single line may convey an emotion.
-Piet Mondrian

Other than really loving Mondrian’s work, I wondered why I found this quote so appealing to me last night. Could it be because I really do a lot of line work in my paintings such as with the Horizons or some of the poured work? Could it be those line faces which are nagging me to put them in my sketchbook? Or is it because I really only paint where my emotions lead me and I need to focus even more on line work? Do you have any insights on this subject? Do you like line work?

Now I did show you these faces drawn larger – one per page. I also have drawn a few pages of just small little faces. What I find funny is how all of these feel like adult faces to me. Is that because they are so severe with just the lines? The other thing I might add about these faces is they all come from my imagination…I have never seen one of these faces and tried to get it down. They all just seem to be in my head and need to come out. Maybe they are ghosts. What do you think?

I have said I often get things in my head and I must do things to get them out. One night last week I woke up and had these line faces in my brain. I knew if I did not draw them, I would not get back to sleep . Does your art keep you awake or wake you from sleep?I ended up drawing about 10 of them before I could put the sketchbook down. As you can see, they are nothing but very quick line drawings which were quite simplified.
They are just ink on sketchbook paper. I know I will make more of these, and I have no idea what will come from them. The thing is this is kind of different for me in a way. I was thinking about abstractions and abstract paintings. Some paintings come purely from emotions. As you know I love doing those a great deal and they mean a lot to me. Other abstractions are simplifications of recognizable images. Clearly, we can find examples of a combination of these abstract techniques, but I am wondering if you are attracted to one form of abstraction or another? Do you find you gain more, personally, from one form of abstraction over another?

I still have these faces in my head and you will probably see more of them. Andrea keeps encouraging me to keep my sketchbook going on a daily basis. Often I will mire myself into greater detail when I sketch, so this might be something I am exploring to keep this sketching going on a more regular basis. Do you sketch each day? I look forward to hearing your thoughts.

Happy Monday to Everyone!

While some of my blog friends were nursing sniffles, going to art shows and going along to high teas (you know who you are), I was painting the walls in my foyer and stairwell. And I can tell you they are looking much better. I still have a second coat to apply, then I move on to the upstairs hallway. The walls in this house were all painted in Caucasian and Asian flesh tones or wallpapered in similar hues and that does not suit me or my furnishings very well. So I have slowly been changing these walls.

When I paint walls, I spend a lot of time considering what I would do if I knew I would be in this house for the rest of my life, what I might talk about on this blog, or what other tasks I need to accomplish. Maybe that is why I paint canvases – with those I do not think of such things. But I paint walls in the same way I paint large canvases – sometimes painting large expanses while I dance around and then getting up close and getting tiny details. Do you find there are similarities in painting no matter what you paint? Do you have particular things you think about while you are doing non-creative, rote kinds of tasks?

I did a little canvas painting (you know the big red one), but I am not near ready to share that with you at this point. In the meantime, how about a little dumpr manipulation? This was a photo of some flowers (you can make them out, I am sure) sent to me by my best friend for my last birthday. They are in a handmade, pottery vase my daughter gave me for Christmas last year.

Are you having a good day today? It is my greatest wish you are doing just that!

Yes, I even threw some paint on the wall…but I had not painted that room on purpose and will have to prime it anyway (wallpaper).

I seem to do this. When I have been out of the studio for a while, I tend to want to do something which is poured or thrown rather than brushed. I wonder why that is? This is actually a bit of all three (poured, thrown and brushed). First it is a canvas which was painted before, and I wasn’t crazy about it at all. So I painted over the original with Paynes Grey and allowed some of the paint from before show through. Then I poured some paint (pinks, lavenders, blues). Once that dried…took a while…I mixed some pearl acrylic with some of the clear glaze of which I have become so fond and painted that over the whole thing. I did this 4 times…once vertically, once horizontally and in two different oblique directions. The last thing I have done here is to pour and throw the same colors over the dried pearl effect.

What techniques appeal to you when you have been away from your studio for some period of time? Do you paint over or use parts of previous works you are not pleased with? By chance would your studio wall be reminding you of a Pollock?

I have no idea where this is going, if it goes anywhere. But I thought why not show you messes, too. It is all acrylic on a 30″ x 40″ canvas.
